My husband and I stayed at the Abbe House the second weekend of September this year for our yearly anniversary trip. What we expected to be a welcoming stay and wonderful experience was not at all what we expected. I had some issues with getting emails back from the owner when I had questions about our reservation, and he was very short with me on the phone, not really offering much information about the place. I spoke to him a few times just to make sure our reservation was saved because he did not send any confirmation of our reservation. He told me to call him when we were on our way there. I tried calling the number I had saved in my phone for him, and it said the number had been disconnected. By the time we drove up to the gate, I was worried that something was wrong, and I tried emailing him. There was no speaker button at the gate, just a number pad to enter the passcode. My husband decided it would be best to drive around the gate since we were getting no response and there seemed no way to contact the owner. Not only was I very embarrassed because I tried to talk my husband out of it, but I realized that the phone number I had saved in my phone for the Abbe House was the wrong number and my email would not send because my phone’s service was not working at the gate (had no bars). Even if I had found my earlier mistake, there would have been no service on my phone to call him at the gate. So I was quite embarrassed when we walked in, and I had hoped for understanding in the series of unfortunate events, but the owner made me feel awful about what had happened. I understand he could have been a little perturbed by the commotion, but since we were about to pay him money, he could’ve shrugged it off and let it be - as an unusual event that doesn't happen every day. So, I tried to forget about the embarrassment and just think about our anniversary trip because it is very important to me. We paid the money and went upstairs to pick out our room (yes, we were allowed to pick it out!). We stayed in the Magnolia room, and it seemed pretty nice. We did not stay for supper, though I am sure it was probably delicious from the remarks of the other people who stayed for supper. We wanted to roam the town for the one night we would be alone together without our baby. When we came back to Abbe House, we walked the beautifully kept property and just relaxed. We started to go up to our room, but it seemed someone kept turning the lights off to the hallway upstairs (every time we turned them on they would be off the next time), so it was a little difficult roaming around in the dark. We settled in our room and could hear other people coming upstairs through the wide crack under the door to our room. We found beer bottles behind the chair in the room. Otherwise, the room was clean and comfortable, and we had time to relax. The next surprise was when I tried to take a shower the following morning. The shower head was manually attached (rigged) and I could not adjust it. Needless to say, I am a short person and I had to stand on my tip toes to reach the spray. So, having to take so much time with the shower and trying to look good for my husband, I was a little late for breakfast. It was delicious with eggs, bacon, biscuits and gravy, and coffee. I felt I could get past all the flaws if everyone was so friendly… but right before we left the owner made us feel uncomfortable and embarrassed about what happened the day before. We could have pointed out all the flaws of our stay, but we decided to get out of there and try to spend the rest of our very small vacation on things that would make us feel good (like visiting Jitterbug Café and the various shops downtown). All in all, I can’t say that someone else’s experience would not be a good one, but we will not be returning.
Went for a friend's wedding, we've been to several out at Abbe house, and this one was just perfectly done! You could tell that Mark and his team put in a lot of effort to make this a magical evening for the bride and groom!
Spent the weekend there for a friend’s wedding. Mark & the staff were incrediable. We had such an amazing time. Would definitely love to go back for a quite weekend away. So beautiful out there!
I had an enchanting time at the Abbe House. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. The food was delectable and our room was gorgeous! Mark was a delight and very entertaining. He made sure our stay was marvelous. He created exquisite dishes and even made a substitute dinner for me due to my dietary restrictions.
The owners/staff were great!
I would definitely come back, this place is absolutely beautiful!!
Thanks for reading my review.
It was an experience I will never forget and I will be back again this year. If you are looking for a secluded, romantic, and charming destination, this is the place!
